As the capital of New Zealand, Wellington is a fast-paced city which buzzes with a political and cultural energy. From Te Papa museum to the beaches of Oriental Bay, visitors could spend a number of days just acquainting themselves with the sights of the city center without feeling the need to go elsewhere. There comes a time, however, when locals and visitors both feel the need to escape the city for a bit, and some of the best day trips from Wellington are those which venture into the rural coastlines found just a short dive away.
On the Kapiti Coast, just a short 40 minute drive from central Wellington, white sand beaches face towards colorful sunsets and small villages full of artisans and beach lovers are a restful respite from the nearby city. Adventurous visitors can also take a short foray out to Kapiti Island, which is a nature reserve home to some of the country’s rarest birds.
Meanwhile, heading up the eastern coast from Wellington, the Wairarapa Coast is a rural stretch of coastline where rolling green hills merge with an undeveloped shoreline. The rocky promontory at Castlepoint is one of the most oft-photographed attractions in the area, although the lighthouse at Cape Palliser and the hiking trails of the Putangirua Pinnacles Reserve are popular areas which could by day trips unto themselves.
Or, if you would rather venture inland than scour the rural coastlines, the small town of Martinborough is the de facto wine capital of the southern part of the North Island. Even though Martinborough only produces 1% of the nation’s wine, there are ample vineyards to explore during a short getaway. While renting a car can be somewhat expensive, there are a few companies which offer day tours to Martinborough and have you back in Wellington in time for dinner and a drink.
