Whitewater rafting only minutes from Taupo
In many ways, you could almost say that the city of Taupo is the North Island equivalent of Queenstown. Both of these cites are set on a lake, both are at the base of the island’s best ski slopes, and both are full of adventure activities that will leave you high on adrenaline. Taupo, however, doesn’t see nearly as many international visitors as its famous cousin to the south, although many of the outdoor activities in Taupo are just as enjoyable as Queenstown.
Jet boating at Huka Falls, for example, is often regarded as one of the best jet boat rides you’ll find anywhere in New Zealand. Race at top speeds up the Waikato River towards the base of Huka Falls, where you can’t even hear the flap of your cheeks over the sound of thundering water. You can also go rafting on the Tongariro River, go kayaking to caves along the shoreline of Lake Taupo, or soar high above the shimmering lake waters from the colorful canopy of a parasail.
For an extra shot of Taupo adrenaline, strap a bungy cord around your legs and jump over the Waikato River, or throw yourself out of the side of a plane while skydiving over Lake Taupo.
On the less-extreme end of activities, there are miles of hiking and biking the trails in the mountains surrounding the lake. One of the most popular walks is the four-hour trek from Huka Falls to Aratiatia Rapids, the dam-controlled canyon that becomes a cauldron of whitewater whenever the water is released. Taupo is also only 90 minutes from Tongariro National Park, where some of the best hiking trails on the North Island of New Zealand are possible as a day trip from Taupo.
In winter, Taupo is also within striking distance of the best ski resorts on the North Island, and it’s only a little over an hour drive to the ski field at Whakapapa. Before you know it the winter snows are melting into the Waikato River, and another summer begins anew for outdoor activities in Taupo.
